The renovated house was scheduled for demolition due to its age, but in the Edo period it was a “Gomen-yashiki” (a residence where residents were given a tax exemption) where the local people paid taxes in gratitude to the doctor, and as a token of their gratitude, it was spared demolition.

It was completely demolished and various administrative rooms were added to the south, while the Japanese-style adjacent room on the first floor (guest room) and the second floor (exhibition room) were preserved as they were originally and turned into a soba restaurant. The adjacent rooms each had a formal design with a tokoto and nageshi (rail-like wall), and the floor beams were large, making it suitable for expansion and renovation. The transom on the veranda was still a shoji screen, so one of them was used as a smoke exhaust window (lol). The shoe-removal stone on the veranda was dug up from a kimachi-stone that supported the foundation stone of the main pillar, and was carefully finished even to the point where it was hidden in the soil. Perhaps it was the spirit of the craftsman.
The design of the namako wall, the corbel-shaped plaster on the ridgepole, the parent-child lattice, etc. were copied from the details of the surrounding houses. The meeting hall was built in the style of a storehouse and was positioned facing the Gomen Yashiki across the courtyard.

Located at a small 90 m2 site at the entrance to Ochitani Park, we planned Capri Coffee Beans to blend in with the surrounding environment and become a cozy, beloved store.

A bright courtyard is set up at the back of the building to invite people walking by, and the seating is arranged so that the courtyard can be seen from any seat. The stairs are a light, suspended structure so as not to block the view to the courtyard, and a split-level floor connects the first and second floors. The second floor has a lowered floor height to create a calm space, and the gable and arch truss are fixed with wooden plugs as a structural expression of the small space. (The arch beam is carved out as a single unit up to the navel and fixed with a wooden plug.)

In Tottori City, I feel that the folk art created by Shoya Yoshida is still alive in people’s lives. 43 years after his death, he may have finally found his feet on the ground. I hope that Capri will also be loved for a long time in line with that lineage.

This was an unusual request for a gallery, but with the increasing number of tourists coming and going along Kamimon-dori street at Izumo Taisha Shrine, a filter was needed to select customers.

As a minimal architectural move that would not destroy the taste of the shop, we replaced one glass door and installed a steel display shelf behind the glass doors other than the entrance to block the view. The display shelf has slits for displaying works lower than eye level, allowing visitors to get a sneak peek inside the shop. This is a device that encourages people who do not resonate with the exhibits to pass by.

We installed small lights to illuminate the works, creating a small night view of Kamimon-dori street.

While reinforcing the structure and ensuring the insulation of this old house with its mud-walled structure, we renovated the first floor into a bakery and the second floor into a tenant space.

Without changing the exterior that blends in with the street, we reused the existing glass windows, old fittings, old zelkova boards, and old chestnut pillars to create a new and tasteful space.

We hope that the 100-year history of Izumo Taisha Kamimon Street will be enhanced by the renovated shops lining the street, making it an even more attractive streetscape in the future.

Komochizuki is a relaxing space that was renovated from a vacant house into a cafe. The old townhouse was renovated by reinforcing its structure while leaving the framework of the building intact. By allowing a view from the front garden to the back garden, the dark and closed-in townhouse was transformed into a continuous, bright cafe space. The rough wall that is exposed from under the existing wall has a beautiful cross-covering, and in contrast to the new earthen wall, the old and new blend together to create a new yet nostalgic space.

Fresh vegetable store, restaurant, pastry shop. Considering the synergy and showiness of the stores, which have slightly different customer bases and business hours, the four buildings are arranged like a village surrounding a square. We hoped that by keeping the eaves of the buildings low, varying the form of the roofs that form the outline of the village, abstracting the buildings in white to highlight the greenery of the square, and directing the space with skylights, all of these things common to each building, a connection like renga (a renga poem) would be created in Tougen Village.

In the restaurant, the traditional structure of a thatched roof house is reproduced with old materials, contrasting with the neutral white space. The ridgepole, sasu log grouping, and tsumugi (railings) illuminated by the light of the skylight are distant landscapes that have been passed down in the Izumo region.
In the pastry shop, a single old piece of wood inherits the renga poem, and the small sunlight filtering through the trees becomes a sundial that records the movement of the sun on the wall.
The Tougen Market is a column-free space with truss beams. Traditional construction methods are used in the truss beam connections.
