The grounds of Wan’en-ji Temple were designated a national historic site in 2016, and conservation and repair work was carried out over a five-year period on the Shakado and Kaisan-do Halls.

The Shakado Hall was completely demolished as it had decayed throughout. The ink inscriptions on the hall indicate that it was built in the fourth year of Kanbun, that the upper frame behind the Raigo pillar had been cut down, and that the memorial tablet shelf had been enshrined in the fourth year of Shotoku.

The Kaisan-do Hall was partially demolished and the roof and trusswork were repaired. It was built in the third year of Bunkyu or earlier, and repairs were confirmed for the memorial tablet shelf on the back eaves and the high-ne joints on the pillars.

Detailed repair records have been compiled in the “Report on the conservation and repair work on the buildings in the grounds of Wan’en-ji Temple (Shakado and Kaisan-do Hall), a national historic site,” and can be viewed at the Shimane Prefectural Library and libraries in Izumo City.

Chikoin is the family temple of the Tagi Sakurai family, who operated a tatara ironworks, and the ceiling paintings and transom work are worth seeing. The god of ironworks is enshrined at the nearby Kanayago Shrine. Its historical value as a building that conveys ironworking from the Edo period has led to it being designated as a national historic site. The restoration was carried out using the same materials and construction methods as those used at the time.
