Group Home Deto LaLa is located in a rural area dotted with scattered villages surrounded by Tsukiji pine trees. There are many farmhouses with large houses in the surrounding area, so the group home, which is a home for the elderly, was required to have a solid appearance.

The office functions are concentrated in the center of the building, and the corridor connecting the living room and rooms is long so that it can also serve as a rehabilitation corridor. The living room and conversation corner are brightly lit by skylights and have a Japanese-style rafter structure, modeled after farmhouses.

The old building was a two-story reinforced concrete building, but when it was relocated and rebuilt, a wooden one-story building was required, a quiet crawling room, and an active nursery room directly connected to the grounds for the children in the middle and senior years. The requested nursery rooms were seven rooms for children aged 0 to 5 years and a childcare support room, for a total of 142 children.

In order to place the nursery rooms for children aged 1 to 5 years facing south on the site that is long and narrow from north to south, the south side was extended in a curve, and the nursery rooms were planned to be connected to the southern garden. The quarter-circle building is structurally stable with partition walls arranged radially as earthquake-resistant walls, and the afternoon sunlight is also redirected into the nursery rooms. The nursery rooms are connected to the wooden deck by sliding doors, and the activity area extends up to the eaves.
The entrance separates the area for infants from the area for older children, separating the pathways of daily life and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. The central corridor is a bright indoor environment with natural light from the high ceilings, and is planned to be a place for activities with a cafeteria, picture book corner, hangout area, etc. The corridor leading to the playroom is also equipped with a children’s house and a play area with a climbing board. The children’s house is a two-story children’s hideout made of J-panels, and is exempt from interior restrictions as it is treated as free-standing furniture.

The southern garden of the building is used as a ground for sports days, while the northern garden is equipped with a hill, sandbox, and well pump, and is a forest plaza with fruit trees and shrubs. We plan to continue adding more shrubs and play equipment, and we look forward to watching the building and forest grow along with the children.

(Winner of the Grand Prize at the 2020 Shimane Architecture and Housing Competition)

Komochizuki is a relaxing space that was renovated from a vacant house into a cafe. The old townhouse was renovated by reinforcing its structure while leaving the framework of the building intact. By allowing a view from the front garden to the back garden, the dark and closed-in townhouse was transformed into a continuous, bright cafe space. The rough wall that is exposed from under the existing wall has a beautiful cross-covering, and in contrast to the new earthen wall, the old and new blend together to create a new yet nostalgic space.

While reinforcing the structure and ensuring the insulation of this old house with its mud-walled structure, we renovated the first floor into a bakery and the second floor into a tenant space.

Without changing the exterior that blends in with the street, we reused the existing glass windows, old fittings, old zelkova boards, and old chestnut pillars to create a new and tasteful space.

We hope that the 100-year history of Izumo Taisha Kamimon Street will be enhanced by the renovated shops lining the street, making it an even more attractive streetscape in the future.

The client couple chose to continue living in their childhood home rather than a simple manufacturer’s house, so they carried out a complete renovation of their family home, which was built in 1969.
The extension that caused a lack of light was demolished to improve lighting and ventilation. The aging plumbing was also completely renovated, and the earthquake resistance and insulation were improved, reviving the bright and comfortable living space. The living room was expanded by incorporating an unnecessary hallway. The curved beams confront the new space, conveying the changes of the times.
The family made the paper holders and painted the floors, and we think they will enjoy working on future maintenance as well.
