Soan Restaurant is a renovated Taisho-era house from Miyagawa Village, Gifu Prefecture. The history and memories of the house are combined with Shimane materials, handcrafted chandeliers, and antique European furniture to create a multi-layered space where Japanese, Western and craft elements coexist.

A space with the scent of wood, a sloped roof, and a space where the family can feel each other’s presence were required. The DK is connected to the wood deck on the south side, creating an open space. A large staircase connects the study corner where the family gathers, making the first and second floors feel like a continuous space. By eliminating the interior walls and exposing the structural materials, the moisture-regulating effect and anti-sacrificial effect of the wood are improved, making the building easier to maintain. The exterior insulation is designed to allow air to pass through the one-room apartment in summer, and to heat the whole house with a single wood stove in winter. The openings are made airtight with glass, shoji screens, and airtight roller screens.

The site is located near the rock trough of the Hii River and is in an environment rich in nature. We wanted to balance the housework flow, veranda, built-in sofa, storage, and bookshelf with the kitchen at the center. In a tranquil environment, the comfort of living is proportional to the size of the opening, so we ensured a large opening in the living room. The veranda has been a device that connects nature and life since ancient times, and seemed appropriate for a peaceful environment.

A deep eaves is hung over the veranda to connect life and nature, and the circulation flow is centered around the DK. The kitchen is located in the center of the house with a space that can be used by a couple, and it is a radiating plane from which the view to the garden spreads. A large beam that runs diagonally through the rectangular space divides the space, and a large volume is secured with a stairwell and a sloped ceiling with thick rafters.

A skylight is installed in the stairwell in the living room to encourage natural lighting and gravity ventilation, and the presence of the family is transmitted between the private room on the second floor and the first floor. The two sofas are placed at a distance from each other so that they do not interfere with each other. The table is black cherry (Benchwork Tatenui) to match the color of the furniture. In the garden, a large crape myrtle is placed as the centerpiece so that children can climb it.

ふたりの家

定年後を再び故郷で過ごす二人のための御新居です。肩の荷を下ろして暮らす小さくて心地良いシンプルライフ。軒の深いウッドデッキを設けリビングを拡張しました。天気のいい日にはご夫婦揃って日向ぼっこができそうです。老後への心配よりも気持ちよく過ごせるおおらかな空間が求められ、若々しい住まいとなりました。

Rather than the easy, convenient life of pushing just one button, they desired a slow life where they could pay attention to the changing seasons and the changes in nature. A life where they put time and effort into the details of life and enjoy each and every aspect with their own senses.
The earthen floor of the one-room apartment allows the valley breeze to pass through, and the furniture is raised so there are no drifts. In summer, a cool breeze blows across the rice fields through the reed doors, and in winter, the wood stove creates a comfortable indoor environment with no temperature differences throughout the house.

「家族がどこにいても気配が感じられるようなワンルームの住まい」、「キッチンを中心とした昔ながらの土間の家」を望まれました。
ホール、キッチンなどは土間となっており、中央ホールには高さ６ｍの大きな吹き抜けがあります。土間で家の中と外が繋がった大きなワンルームは風通しが良く、夏は扇風機がなくても快適に過ごせ、冬はホールに設けられた薪ストーブで温かく過ごすことができます。
