While working as a farmer, the owner himself cut down the wood for one house (about 200 trees).
The main house, where three generations will live together, was required to have a traditional appearance, and the house was designed to convey the presence of the family through the atrium, which is centered around the hall.
Most of the trees that were cut down were cypress, with some cedar and broadleaf trees mixed in. Tabu was used for the main pillars, oak for the threshold, cherry for the counter top, and cedar and cypress were used in the right places for structural and fitting materials. The through pillars in the atrium are knot-free on the first floor and knotted on the second floor, revealing the original appearance of the mountain grove.
It took six months to cut down the trees using a crane and chainsaw, six months to let the leaves dry, and two years to let it dry naturally, and it took four years from cutting down the trees to completing the construction, and a space that smells of wood was created. With precise hand-carving, the building was erected horizontally and vertically without any temporary braces when the ridgepole was raised. The wood felled this time was a cypress tree that the owner planted with his father when he was young, and wood from the countryside and red tiles and beams from a demolished old house were reused. A sustainable lifestyle was found in this traditional approach to making effective use of resources.

One of the Japanese-style rooms was incorporated to expand the house into a southern-lit living/dining/kitchen area, and the bedroom, washroom, and bathroom were renovated and the insulation was improved. The porch sashes were replaced with double-glazed windows, and triple-drum-shaped shoji screens were added to further improve insulation. The shoji screens not only soften the direct sunlight, but also invert the space when closed, which is one of the architectural beauties. We want to cherish both their performance and the calming view at night.

The space expanded by removing the corridor and porch now has two circulation routes, where children can run around.
The garden was also cleared of overgrown trees and landscaping, creating a perfect playground for children.

We purchased a rented house occupied by a newlywed couple and renovated it into a place for them to live with their children. They were required to have a work flow connecting the kitchen and bathroom, a family closet, a living/dining/kitchen area connected to a veranda, solid wood, and insulation.

After 15 proposals, we found that the best way to utilize the limited site was to keep the expansion area small and secure a parking lot and garden, and we settled on a simple plan.
The private room and closet were demolished to create a one-room living/dining/kitchen area. A veranda was installed in the living room, and wooden fittings were used to connect the inside and outside, creating a space with mobility.
As the area is cold and snowfall is 1m, the wooden fittings are low-e double-glazed, but the taiko shoji screens are also triple-insulated.

We wanted to balance the housework flow, veranda, built-in sofa, storage, and bookshelf with the kitchen at the center. In a tranquil environment, the comfort of living is proportional to the size of the opening, so we ensured a large opening in the living room. The veranda has been a device that connects nature and life since ancient times, and seemed appropriate for a peaceful environment.

A deep eaves is hung over the veranda to connect life and nature, and the circulation flow is centered around the DK. The kitchen is located in the center of the house with a space that can be used by a couple, and it is a radiating plane from which the view to the garden spreads. A large beam that runs diagonally through the rectangular space divides the space, and a large volume is secured with a stairwell and a sloped ceiling with thick rafters.

A skylight is installed in the stairwell in the living room to encourage natural lighting and gravity ventilation, and the presence of the family is transmitted between the private room on the second floor and the first floor. The two sofas are placed at a distance from each other so that they do not interfere with each other. The table is black cherry (Benchwork Tatenui) to match the color of the furniture. In the garden, a large crape myrtle is placed as the centerpiece so that children can climb it.

The renovation included the remodeling of the bathroom, dining room, and bedroom, as well as structural reinforcement and insulation improvements.
One of the Japanese-style rooms was converted into a one-room dining room, but an entrance hall and hallway were added to the 11.7m2 six-tatami room, making the dining room 35.7m2 (approximately 20 tatami mats). The dining room is connected to the private rooms on the second floor by an open ceiling, allowing air and light to flow through. A wood stove was also added, making it a place to enjoy daily life.
The tokonoma alcove, made of black pine, conveys the taste of the owner at the time and is now a valuable fixture. The unfinished walls were left intact in imitation of the existing building, creating a tasteful home where old and new overlap.

The demand was for a home that would be loved through the ages, like an old folk house that can be passed down to children and grandchildren. It is not flashy, but we aimed to reflect the climate and culture of Sanin in order to ensure its durability over 100 years.
The exterior is all black, with Sekishu roof tiles and burnt cedar boards, and the raw cedar board finish on the veranda and eaves serves as an accent color. A veranda has been installed under the deep eaves in the garden, where the family diligently grows vegetables, and a sliding door connects the inside and outside. The interior is made of plaster-painted unfinished walls. An open void in the living room connects the upper and lower floors, allowing in light and ventilation. A small hobby room has been set up in the newly-renovated attic.
It is an airtight, highly insulated home, but it’s not just the numerical performance that makes it so great; I think the secret to it being loved for 100 years is not just the comfort it provides when the veranda is fully opened on sunny days, giving the feeling of being connected to the earth.
