The old house on the hill, a sturdy Edo-period structure with chestnut pillars and beams, lost its spectacular view of the rice terraces when a second floor was added in 1984. The renovation aimed to restore that view, improve water facilities, enhance insulation and earthquake resistance, and add a new pottery studio.
The hallway and small rooms were removed to create a large living/dining/kitchen space, allowing for views of the terraces and mountains. A lunch area under the eaves was added to the living room and studio, with great views. The renovated house now welcomes wind and light, and its appearance, overlooking the rice terraces, evokes the original rice-shaped dwelling.
The tatami room was re-covered with cedar boards, creating a new bedroom, a project the owner completed himself. Growing up in the city, the owner’s ability to repair and maintain the house reflects his self-sufficient lifestyle.
This 200-year-old house, now with a new owner, has been updated for modern needs, extending its life. The secret to long-lasting architecture? Its ability to adapt and remain cherished over time.

This is a renovation of an old townhouse that has been expanded and remodeled many times since the Meiji and Showa periods. The desire was for a multi-purpose room that could be used not only for living but also for a cram school, etc.
The overall plan was centered on the Meiji-era storehouse, and a new entrance hall was created in the area where the dilapidated house was demolished. Although it is now the back entrance, it has a large front garden, making it a more imposing space.
The storehouse was brought back to life by removing a small room to create a large space and finishing it with plaster.
The chisel marks on the flat stones that cover the dirt floor, the holes left in the pillars where the earthen walls had been removed, the rusty iron bars of the storehouse windows…each of these traces gives a glimpse of the skills and lifestyle of our ancestors. When you realize that even the inconveniences are in fact irreplaceable memories, you also want to preserve those scenes. Some walls of the storehouse lack cornerstones or foundations, but the generosity that does not mind the shortcomings is reassuring.
In an effort to save money, they used dismantled ceiling panels to replace damaged materials in the slab walls, and repaired the Mairado door and repurposed it as an entrance door to the storehouse. At the request of the son, they tried to create a quiet nighttime atmosphere with a bar counter in the storehouse.
The authenticity was brought about by the low cost, but by preserving the original handiwork, it has become a one-of-a-kind sight. They hope that the children who come to the cram school can sense the time inherent in the architecture.

With the bank of the Hii River to the south and a rural landscape to the north, this old house was blessed with a peaceful environment and views, but the extension and renovation impaired ventilation and lighting, and some parts even subsided.
The client family purchased the old house hoping to live in a rural area connected to nature and history. It was renovated to make it a vessel for modern life. The renovation took into consideration earthquake resistance, insulation, and comfort. A seismic core was installed in the center of the main house, and the center of gravity and rigidity were aligned to ensure long-term stability. The Japanese-style room was left intact, and the rooms on the north side were made into a large one-room living/dining/kitchen area that is open to the scenery.
The surface of the S-shaped beams floating in the atrium was damaged, but thanks to the efforts of the site supervisor, they were restored, creating a tasteful space where the new space faces old materials from the Edo period. The existing Mairado door was made into a new pantry, and the lattice door was reused by combining it with airtight glass.

The renovated building was built in 1973 as a detached house from the main house. Two Japanese-style rooms were added to the first floor, and the second floor was used as a storage room with rough walls. It was renovated to become the new home for the eldest son’s family. The requirements included reducing the burden of housework, easy access for children to the garden and fields, a bright and open atmosphere, high airtightness, high insulation, and earthquake resistance, a calm atmosphere using natural materials, and an open kitchen that does not feel isolated.

The renovation involved a complete renovation with only the tiled roof and exterior walls remaining. All partitions on the first floor were removed and the beams were rearranged to create a one-room living/dining/kitchen room. The living/dining/kitchen room is connected to the north and south gardens, making it a bright and airy living/dining/kitchen room. The first floor ceiling is made of straight-grained red cedar boards, and the lighting plan makes the ceiling material stand out. The existing rafters on the second floor are colored to contrast with the new space, and private rooms and bathrooms are provided to take advantage of the view.

The fact that one family can live independently in a detached house of about 100m2 is good news for multi-generational families living close to each other. The prefecture was able to provide subsidies for raising children and earthquake-resistance renovations. For the grandfather, this marks the start of living close to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and it couldn’t be more fun.

A son and his family are living in an old house built by his grandfather in the first year of the Meiji era. The parents had a deep attachment to the old house, and it was a building that had been cherished, so they wanted to add modern comfort while preserving its atmosphere. The kitchen has already been renovated, and a new bathroom and insulation renovation was carried out. The Showa era extension was demolished and the house was returned to its original appearance.

In order to preserve the atmosphere of the veranda, the single sliding glass door was left, and a retractable drum-shaped shoji screen was used to keep it warm in the winter. When opened, the Japanese-style room and the garden are connected, as before, and when the retractable shoji screen is closed, the Japanese-style room becomes an extension of the Japanese-style room, expanding the area for activities. The shoji screen not only blocks views, but also has excellent heat retention and moisture permeability, and these excellent functions of the shoji screen are relied upon in this renovation.

The idea was that if the Japanese-style room is used appropriately, there is no need for private rooms, so the adjacent room was left, and we are pleased that we were able to preserve the freedom and ventilation of the rice-rice-shaped floor plan, which is the greatest advantage of a private house.

This old house was renovated so that a family who had been living apart could come back together, and it became a new place of living for the parents, children, and three generations of a seven-person family, as well as their two dogs.

When the renovation was completed, it was moving to see that the front parlor could be left as it was. The plan was decided to leave it as it was, instead of renovating the less-used parlor. The main purpose of the main house construction (1919) was to have a view from the front parlor, facing the Kamina volcano and incorporating the mountain behind it into the scenery, and the fact that it could be restored without compromising it made not only the owner, but everyone involved in the construction very happy.

The three-bay Japanese-style room was boldly replaced with the entrance, and the Japanese-style room was reduced to a two-bay adjacent room. The living/dining/kitchen area with the stove was the original entrance, expanding the living space. The exterior platform was also moved here, maintaining the connection to the outdoors and the status of the house. The ability to freely rearrange the hashirama equipment is one of the characteristics of traditional framework construction, and it can be said to be an outstanding system that meets the demands of the times.
The Showa era, when the house was constantly expanding with repeated additions, has now passed, and the dilapidated Tenyamon gate, storehouse, and Showa-era extension have been demolished, and the family’s memories have been rebuilt by adding things like a wood stove for caregiving, leaving only the necessary space.

The vacant house where my parents grew up had black beams and clay walls. However, the son and his wife, who had noticed the shadows in the dark space, became the client and wanted a place to live that made use of the black soot that connects to old ways of life.

The townhouse in Mori, Yasugi City, has a wide frontage and a large garden. The storehouse and new parlor that had been added to the garden were demolished to restore ventilation and lighting, and the earthen floor was expanded to create a living space that connects to the town through the lattice.

The low-ceilinged attic was renovated into a calm bedroom, and it was made into a flexible one-room apartment that can be partitioned in the future.

When restoring old houses, a bright space is often required, but here many of the walls are painted black, and the few walls are painted in neutral colors that reflect light, achieving a balance between natural light and artificial lighting.

The earthen wall of the tokonoma alcove was significantly cracked in the Tottori Prefecture Western Earthquake. In order to reduce the cost of restoring the earthen wall, we mixed plaster and color powder to create an earthen color.

(Received the Encouragement Award at the 2019 Shimane Architecture and Housing Competition)
