Located at a small 90 m2 site at the entrance to Ochitani Park, we planned Capri Coffee Beans to blend in with the surrounding environment and become a cozy, beloved store.
A bright courtyard is set up at the back of the building to invite people walking by, and the seating is arranged so that the courtyard can be seen from any seat. The stairs are a light, suspended structure so as not to block the view to the courtyard, and a split-level floor connects the first and second floors. The second floor has a lowered floor height to create a calm space, and the gable and arch truss are fixed with wooden plugs as a structural expression of the small space. (The arch beam is carved out as a single unit up to the navel and fixed with a wooden plug.)
In Tottori City, I feel that the folk art created by Shoya Yoshida is still alive in people’s lives. 43 years after his death, he may have finally found his feet on the ground. I hope that Capri will also be loved for a long time in line with that lineage.
