As the family grew, it became necessary to utilize the previously unused front room and secure a room for the children. The front room had been damaged by termites, but due to the family’s attachment to the main house that had been lived in for many years and to reduce the budget, the renovation was carried out to make it earthquake-resistant, insulated, airtight, and beautiful.
The earthquake-resistance renovation included adding earthquake-resistant walls while retaining the existing layout, building a new foundation and concrete foundation on the foundation stone building to make it earthquake-resistant, replacing the termite-damaged pillars, reinforcing metal fittings, and leveling unevenness.
The front room on the first floor was revived as a space for entertaining guests, the dark and cramped dining kitchen and entrance hall were made bright and open, and the attic on the second floor became a place for the three children.
Old buildings line up side by side in Kami-Ochi, Taisha-cho. If it had been a new building, the construction would have been easy, but I think one of the benefits of this project was that the scenery of the Machiya was preserved through the renovation.
