old house in karakawa( Izumo)

Karakawacho is a village that continues to convey history from the Izumo Fudoki to the present day. This is a renovation project to connect a 135-year-old Meiji-era house to the next 100 years. I was impressed by the attitude of prioritizing durability over specs such as measures against the cold in winter and earthquake resistance, or trendy styles. I think this is a decision that only an old house that has been passed down from my grandfather’s generation and lived in together can make. This time, we carried out the bare minimum of repairs, such as replacing the roof, exterior walls, fittings, and replacing rotten and ant-eaten wood. It felt like a natural choice in Karakawa to keep the layout that we were born and raised in, and live with our family’s memories, rather than a new living, dining, and kitchen.
