A 7-room, vacant house with a garage and garden was completely livable as is, and was renovated in 1998, but the adjacent Japanese-style room facing the garden blocked the living/dining/kitchen area.
One of the Japanese-style rooms was incorporated to expand the house into a southern-lit living/dining/kitchen area, and the bedroom, washroom, and bathroom were renovated and the insulation was improved. The porch sashes were replaced with double-glazed windows, and triple-drum-shaped shoji screens were added to further improve insulation. The shoji screens not only soften the direct sunlight, but also invert the space when closed, which is one of the architectural beauties. We want to cherish both their performance and the calming view at night.
The space expanded by removing the corridor and porch now has two circulation routes, where children can run around.
The garden was also cleared of overgrown trees and landscaping, creating a perfect playground for children.
