Title
childrens room in storehouse renovation( Izumo)
2016
Comment
Renovated an Edo-period storehouse into a children’s room. A spiral staircase connects the top and bottom of the small space, creating a one-room open-ceiling space. The old wood is left as is and painted in an antique color, contrasting with the white of the newly painted walls and the spiral staircase. A small study is also installed in the children’s living room on the first floor, creating a space with depth.
The spiral staircase was inspired by disassembling the staircase parts in order to incorporate the stairs into the storehouse. The FB cylinder is fixed to the floor beam and the hanging bolt is supported by this, creating a light hanging structure.
The rafters of the storehouse have a calligraphy dated 1863, and the names of the carpenters and woodcutters left on the rafters give a sense of the traditional culture conveyed by the architecture, along with the feelings of the craftsmen who completed their responsible work.
I’m looking forward to seeing how the restored traditional architectural space will develop the sensibilities of children!
